Librarian Substitutes 2.0 Home

Welcome!

The Librarian Substitutes 2.0 wiki is a place for substitute librarians to network, pool our knowledge, and develop professionally. We envision this site as "One Stop Shopping" for the Library Sub, with links to key resources in many kinds of librarianship.

Library Substitutes need to keep current in many areas. One day we may sub as a children's librarian and conduct a storytime, answer questions about early literacy, and recommend a new book to a 4th grade voracious reader. The next day we may answer dozens of questions about homework sources and do Reader's Advisory for teens -- and then not use those skills for another six weeks. On another day, we may work in a special department and need expertise in investments, government documents, art, music, literature, history or government. We need to keep current on Library 2.0 skills, and there are topics unique to librarian substitutes, such as what to do when you sub at a library for the first time.

The web 2.0 program, 23 Things on a Stick, now has a sequel: More Things on a Stick. I enjoyed the first one immensely and have signed up the second one. For information, go to www.morethingsonastick.pbwiki.com Registration deadline is Feb. 20

Activity has been pretty quiet here lately. Just wondering how you are all doing and if anything exciting or interesting is going on in your lives or if you have any useful library wisdom to share.

Are you getting enough hours?

If you're interested, I just set up a new blog, called Bookwormishnerd's E-Pages, at http://bookwormishnerdse-pages.blogspot.com
I posted an article about using the terms "Reference Desk", "Information Desk", "Service Desk", and "Circulation Desk" and the associations with these terms.
I will also add this link to the blogs page.

I've been busy lately so I have temporarily set aside but have not forgotten about the Subbing Article project. I hope to get a rough draft of the article posted on the wiki within the next two weeks. Right now I have an outline of possible things to cover. Any feedback or suggestions are more than welcome.

bookwormishnerd Passing the time during slow periods at the reference desk 1 Nov 22 2008, 5:48 PM EST by bookwormishnerd

At the reference desk, frequently there are slow periods when no one is in line and no one appears to need help. What productive things can you do to pass the time? (besides checking email?)

Here are my ideas:

*Ask a lead librarian if there is a project or something you can help out with.
*If you can leave the reference desk for awhile, offer to help shelve, fill up the display area with books, or walk around and tidy up.
*Read up on Web 2.0 and serving teens in the library and post your findings here.
*Read articles and blogs on librarianship
*Explore the features on the Staff Web, and the websites (both Minneapolis and Suburban). Check out some of the recommended weblinks and the databases and practice searching in them.

Anything else?
