This wiki hasn't seen activity for a long time. I haven't been active on it either. Are you all still subbing? Or did you get a job elsewhere?

Activity has been pretty quiet here lately. Just wondering how you are all doing and if anything exciting or interesting is going on in your lives or if you have any useful library wisdom to share.
Are you getting enough hours? If you're interested, I just set up a new blog, called Bookwormishnerd's E-Pages, at http://bookwormishnerdse-pages.blogspot.com I posted an article about using the terms "Reference Desk", "Information Desk", "Service Desk", and "Circulation Desk" and the associations with these terms. I will also add this link to the blogs page. I've been busy lately so I have temporarily set aside but have not forgotten about the Subbing Article project. I hope to get a rough draft of the article posted on the wiki within the next two weeks. Right now I have an outline of possible things to cover. Any feedback or suggestions are more than welcome. |

At the reference desk, frequently there are slow periods when no one is in line and no one appears to need help. What productive things can you do to pass the time? (besides checking email?)
Here are my ideas: *Ask a lead librarian if there is a project or something you can help out with. *If you can leave the reference desk for awhile, offer to help shelve, fill up the display area with books, or walk around and tidy up. *Read up on Web 2.0 and serving teens in the library and post your findings here. *Read articles and blogs on librarianship *Explore the features on the Staff Web, and the websites (both Minneapolis and Suburban). Check out some of the recommended weblinks and the databases and practice searching in them. Anything else?

I just found something really fun. It's a Literature Map, http://www.literature-map.com/. You key in an author name and it shows other authors you might like, or that are similar. You can click on any of those names and keep going. Very fun. I find associative lists endlessly fascinating, since they are reflections of how we classify things -- there's more than just alpha order or LC or Dewey, as we know, so I love looking at other systems of relationships.
It would be good for RA, but I'm not sure we want or need an RA page here since there are good resources available on the HCL sites and elsewhere online.

Hello there,
I'm wondering if any of you are planning on attending the MLA Conference in November? I am and have a few questions so if you've attended previous conferences maybe you can help. What goes on during the Business Meetings? If you are going to this one, do you have any tips on what you'd recommend for the choices under parts "D" and "H"? I'm having trouble deciding. Thanks!

What do you think of the proposed HCL budget cuts?
I was getting ready to blog my responses to the budget cutting ideas, and I am glad they didn't cut services to teens or computer instruction/availability. I wonder if the Children's Readmobile and At Home services are slated for cuts because they are visible, in hopes people will rally to keep them. I don't know how successful a request for more money would be with layoffs elsewhere in the county. I'm sad to read the tone of the Minneapolis Star Tribune article and comments. "City-county library merger running $3.5 million more than expected" at http://www.startribune.com/local/west/20902899.html?location_refer=Local%20+%20Metro:highlightModules:1.

I got a job correcting standardized writing tests for the month of October, 8:00-4:00, M-F. I have signed up for a couple of weekend library shifts. Wish me luck! Have a great month, and keep in touch!
I know a couple of people who do this kind of work, and they seem to enjoy it. They say it fits well with sub work when sub hours are low.

So far I only have two Saturdays and two Sunday afternoons with work in October. If your work schedule is this sketchy in October, should we have a meetup?
If people are interested, let me know, and tell me your location. I'll figure out an approximate geographical middle. Of course, North East Minneapolis is the center of the world! We could have an unconference in a bar somewhere.

I added three pages: Resume Help, Public Software, and Triple Crown.
Triple Crown is misplaced under Public Software; I will move it but don't have time right now. Or feel free! I didn't know if wanted a whole Reader's Advisory page, there are so many resources I don't know that we need to duplicate.

I had a customer who needed to submit a PDF doc for a job application, but the software doesn't support saving a doc as a PDF. Others on site knew that you can upload to Google docs, save as a PDF, and download the PDF back to your job ap, disc, whatever.
That's why I added the Public Software page. Ihaven't tested it, but the Acrobat software looks promising.

I added a page for job search/job listings, since the sub budget seems precarious at best.
We can also post links to relevant articles on job searching. How do you promote your sub experience when you interview? I believe our exposure to multiple settings is something to brag about, but I'm not sure I convey it well in interviews. I usually say something like "urban and suburban libraries, customers of all ages, races, and postitions on the socioeconomic spectrum." NOTE: there are openings in Dakota County now.

Libraries are now staffing at critical levels, which means 2 librarians and 2 aides in the branch libraries. (This is from the last lines of the schedules posted online in Mpls Staff Portal/Schedules.)
We used to staff at the Current Guide level. This is true, I believe for suburban libraries as well. Sometimes a library will still be staffed at the Current Guide, but our higher powers are pushing back against that. And that's why we don't see many shifts. Maybe you knew this. I kinda knew it, now I've had it confirmed by my supervisor. Full Staff: Full Staff 2 L, 4.5 A Current Guide 2 L, 4.5 A 2 Critical 2 L, 2 A
